Detroit, MI – A Detroit police officer was shot and killed and four others were wounded after responding to a shots fired call in the early morning of Monday, May 3, 2010, as reported by www.clickondetroit.com. The shooting happened in a vacant duplex.

The shooting occured on the 200,000 block of Schoenherr Road, near Eight Mile Road at approximately 4 a.m.

Police Chief Warren Evans told reporters that the officers were responding to a call of shots fired within a home when they were met with gunfire.

Brian Huff, 42, a 12-year veteran of the force, was from the Eastern District. He died of gunshot wounds after entering the home through the front door.

Huff and his partner were not dispatched to the original call, but went anyways to aid the less experienced officers who were assigned to the run.

Huff’s partner, Officer Joseph D’Angelo, and three others were shot as well. Two of the officers were released from the hospital after treatment. The remaining two remained in serious condition, as of Tuesday, May 4.

Jason Gibson, 25, was apprehended in the back yard of the house where the shots were fired. He faces charges in connection with the death of the officer and the shooting of the four others.

Before Gibson was shot in the back and apprehended at the shooting scene, he was wanted for probation violations. He has a history of assault. Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans said, “This guy’s entire background is assault.”

Huff is survived by his 10-year-old son and wife.
